Akaroa Harbour is one of two underwater volcanic craters which make up the Banks Peninsula. It has amazing rock formations and a carved coastline. We were told the French arrived at Akaroa in 1840 only to find the British had already arrived and claimed sovereignty. However, the atmosphere is definitely French.
