Scenes from New Zealand

This is a shot of the coastline here in Westport.    The beach is about a half mile from our flat.

This photo was taken when we left the airport and the city of Nelson to make our journey to Westport.  The South Island is pretty much the farmland of New Zealand.  Nelson and Christchurch are the larger cities on the Island.  We have seen thousands of sheep and cattle, beautiful vineyards, cherry and olives farms,  so amazingly beautiful.

Westport is a small coal mining - fishing community on the west coast of the South Island on the Tasman Sea.  Population is about 3000.  It is nestled between the mountains and the coast.  The Buller Gorge is the largest river on the coast and winds its way through a number of scenic gorges between Westport and  a smaller town named Murchinson.  Between these two towns, there is a place called Hawks Crag which is a solid granite rock overhanging a single lane stretch of the road.  There is only a mirror to let you know that an oncoming car might be headed in your path.  PRET-TY concerning I must say.
